About the Course

FSF10 introduces students to the French language in practical, everyday contexts. The course focuses on developing basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through engaging, real-world topics. Students build foundational grammar and vocabulary while gaining an appreciation of Francophone cultures.

Curriculum Overview

Unit 1: Everyday Expressions and Foundations
Students strengthen basic French communication skills through practical themes.
Lessons include:

  • Greetings and Introductions
  • Expressing Preferences
  • Pronouns and Articles
  • Dates, Numbers, and Time
  • Present Tense Verbs and Sentence Structures

Unit 2: Family, Hobbies, and Daily Life
This unit centers on personal topics and familiar vocabulary.
Lessons include:

  • Talking About Family
  • Hobbies and Sports (Jouer and Faire)
  • Adjective Agreement and Placement
  • Reflexive and Irregular Verbs
  • Describing Routines and Habits

Unit 3: Past Tense and Storytelling
Students develop storytelling and narration skills using past tenses.
Lessons include:

  • Passé Composé with Avoir and Être
  • Irregular Verbs in the Past Tense
  • Imperfect Tense (L’imparfait)
  • Writing Biographies and Narratives

Unit 4: Future Plans and Global Francophonie
This unit broadens cultural awareness and introduces future tenses.
Lessons include:

  • French-Speaking Regions in Africa and Asia
  • Aller and Le Futur Proche
  • Le Futur Simple
  • Travel Planning in French
  • Budgeting and Itinerary Creation

Assessment Structre

FSF2D assessments build language proficiency through performance-based tasks, oral communication, and written expression:

  • 70% of the final grade is based on coursework, and assignments.
  • 30% of the final grade is based on final evaluations:
    • 10% Culminating written task (multi-paragraph essay or narrative)
    • 20% Final exam (reading comprehension, grammar, listening, and writing)

All assessments align with Ontario curriculum expectations and are designed to build fluency, confidence, and intercultural communication skills in French.
