About the Course

ESLBO helps students continue developing their English language skills for everyday and academic use.

Building on the basics, the course focuses on improving writing structure, reading comprehension, and communication strategies.

Students also gain confidence in understanding Canadian society and working with a variety of text types and media.

Curriculum Overview

Unit 1: Writing Skills Development
Students strengthen their ability to express ideas in written form.
Lessons include:

  • Spelling Strategies

Unit 2: Reading Comprehension and Literature
This unit focuses on reading strategies and working with different types of texts.

  • Comprehension Strategies
  • Goldilocks and the Three Bears
  • Vocabulary Development Strategies
  • The Tortoise and the Hare
  • News and the 5 Ws
  • Introduction to Poetry
  • Fire and Ice by Robert Frost

Unit 3: Communication in Context
Students develop verbal and non-verbal communication skills.

  • Ontario’s Secondary School System & Teamwork
  • Canada
  • The Three Levels of Government
  • Media Forms

Unit 4: Practical Language Use
This unit focuses on functional English for navigating daily life.
Lessons include:

  • Giving and Asking for Directions
  • A Tour of London
  • Greetings in Different Contexts
  • Context Clues in Language
  • Word Emphasis in Speech

Assessment Structre

  • 70% of the final grade is based on coursework, and assignments.
    • Writing tasks (opinion paragraphs, structured essays)
    • Reading comprehension exercises and reflections
    • Oral presentations and discussions
    • Communication and media analysis activities
    • Quizzes and vocabulary development tasks
  • 30% of the final grade is based on final evaluations:
    • 10% Culminating language portfolio (writing, reading, speaking samples)
    • 20% Final test assessing reading, writing, and oral communication

All assessments follow Ontario curriculum standards and are designed to enhance students’ functional English proficiency and cultural understanding for academic and community success.
