Music

AMU4M develops students’ musical knowledge and performance skills through advanced study in music theory, history, and composition.

Students engage in

• Historical contexts of music.

The course supports students pursuing postsecondary studies in music, arts, education, or related creative fields.

Unit 1: Music Performance and Repertoire
Students refine instrumental or vocal techniques through regular practice and performance.

• Advanced Music Notation and Rhythmic Reading
• Key Signatures, Scales, and Modes
• Chord Progressions and Harmonization
• Ear Training: Intervals, Chords, and Melodic Dictation
• Score Analysis and Transcription

Unit 2: Music Theory and Aural Skills
This unit deepens students’ understanding of music structure and listening skills.
Lessons include:

• Advanced Music Notation and Rhythmic Reading
• Key Signatures, Scales, and Modes
• Chord Progressions and Harmonization
• Ear Training: Intervals, Chords, and Melodic Dictation
• Score Analysis and Transcription

Unit 3: Music History and Cultural Context
Students study how music reflects and shapes culture across time periods.
Lessons include:

• The Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern Eras
• Music and Identity: Gender, Race, and Politics in Music
• Global Music Traditions and Indigenous Influences
• Music Technology Through the Ages
• Influential Composers and Movements

Unit 4: Composition and Creativity
This unit encourages students to express themselves through original music creation.
Lessons include:

• Principles of Melody, Harmony, and Form
• Composing for Solo and Small Ensemble
• Using Digital Tools and Notation Software
• Peer Review and Revisions
• Final Composition Project

• 70% of the final grade is based on coursework, including:
  • Individual and group performances
  • Theory and ear training quizzes
  • Listening journals and score analysis
  • Music history research and presentations
  • Original compositions and creative tasks
  • Unit tests and discussion board participation
• 30% of the final grade is based on final evaluations:
  • 10% Final solo or ensemble performance
  • 20% Final composition portfolio or music analysis project

All assessments follow Ontario curriculum standards and are designed to foster musicianship, creativity, cultural literacy, and readiness for advanced musical study or artistic collaboration
