ENL1W – Grade 9 English provides students with a strong foundation in communication, critical thinking, and media literacy—skills essential for academic success and everyday life. This course immerses students in a diverse range of texts and writing styles, encouraging them to think deeply, write clearly, and express themselves confidently.
Students engage in close reading of both literary and informational texts, developing the ability to analyze themes, evaluate arguments, and connect stories to real-world contexts. Through speaking, listening, and collaborative discussion, they also learn how to articulate their thoughts effectively and respectfully while considering diverse viewpoints and cultural perspectives.
Writing is a central focus of the course, as students craft narratives, persuasive pieces, descriptive writing, and analytical essays. They learn how to plan, draft, revise, and polish their work, building a personal voice and refining their grammar, style, and structure with each assignment.
By the end of ENL1W, students will not only be more confident readers and writers—they’ll also be more empathetic, curious, and thoughtful individuals, equipped to succeed in future English courses and across the broader high school curriculum.
